I love Stokvels, but family Stokvels are closest to my heart. In them lies one of the most powerful and underappreciated vehicles for multigenerational transformation.

They enable the transfer of knowledge, skills and wealth in ways that formal systems often overlook. These socioeconomic structures quietly do what many policies attempt to achieve.

Recently I spent time with a family Stokvel that truly inspired me. It was formed over four decades ago by the elders of a dear friend. Today it serves four generations across demographics.

This is Ubuntu economics in action, not as a theory, but as a lived and practical economic shield.

What started with simple burial contributions evolved into far more. The family built a chicken farming cooperative. They created an internal safety net. The older generation carried the younger. Now the younger generation is carrying the older, ensuring retirees can enjoy their pension years with dignity and without anxiety. That is circular capital at work. That is continuity.

What was missing was not commitment or discipline. It was structure.
Risk management through an underwriter to protect and unlock cash flow. Proper estate planning to ensure seamless generational continuity. Long term investment strategies to formalise bursary schemes and optimise tax efficiency.

The heart was always there. The opportunity now is to strengthen the framework around it.

This is the work that excites me. Helping communities move from informal excellence to structured, protected and scalable legacy.

I am looking forward to my next visit to see how they have progressed and to continue walking this journey with them.
