There’s a big difference between talking about the township economy and actually building within it.

Many people can speak about spaza shops, stokvels, and informal markets from a distance. Fewer are willing to do the real work — the work of listening, collaborating, educating, and building systems that communities can genuinely own and benefit from.

Because the future of the township economy will not be unlocked through observation alone.

It will be unlocked through participation.

A Proud Milestone: Welcoming 14 New Stokvels

One of our proudest recent moments has been onboarding 14 new stokvels onto the platform — from burial societies to investment clubs.

Each one represents more than a savings group.

They represent:

  • Trust
  • Collective discipline
  • Community leadership
  • Shared economic ambition

For the past 15 years, through Finlite, we have championed storytelling and financial education as tools for empowerment.

Not corporate jargon.
Not top-down solutions.
But practical, relatable education rooted in the lived realities of township communities.

Because financial transformation starts when people understand the power they already hold.

The Information Economy Runs on Data

We are now living in an information economy.

And in this economy, data is leverage.

The challenge is that millions of people participating in the township economy remain excluded from:

  • Meaningful financial insights
  • Data analytics tools
  • Decision-making support systems
  • Structured access to knowledge

That is the gap we are solving.

Through initiatives like Lwazi AI, the mission is simple but powerful:

To democratise access to:

  • Knowledge
  • Financial education
  • Data-driven tools
  • Strategic insights

…for every:

  • Stokvel
  • Spaza shop
  • Township entrepreneur
  • Unemployed youth ekasi

Because once people can see patterns, trends, risks, and opportunities clearly, they begin to make different decisions.

They begin to see the story inside the chaos.

Seeing Opportunity in the “Mess”

Township economies are often described through the lens of struggle.

But what many call “mess” is often untapped structure waiting to be organised.

Inside these communities are:

  • Informal supply chains
  • Community financing systems
  • Entrepreneurial networks
  • Consumer markets
  • Local innovation ecosystems

The problem is not the absence of economic activity.

The problem is the absence of tools that help people:

  • Measure it
  • Understand it
  • Leverage it
  • Scale it

Even limited resources become powerful when combined with:

  • Knowledge
  • Data
  • Strategy
  • Collective organisation

That’s how small beginnings become sustainable growth.

You Cannot Hand-Hold a Trillion-Rand Economy

The township economy is estimated to be worth close to a trillion rand.

No one can “save” or hand-hold an economy of that scale into prosperity.

What’s needed is not dependency.

It’s enablement.

Real transformation happens when communities are given:

  • Access to information
  • Practical tools
  • Financial education
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Ownership over their own economic narratives

That is the role we believe in.

Not controlling the ecosystem.
Not speaking for communities.
But helping unlock the systems, insights, and opportunities already present within them.

From Informal to Influential

The township economy is no longer a side conversation.

It is becoming one of the most important economic frontiers in South Africa.

And the stokvels, burial societies, youth entrepreneurs, and township businesses driving this movement are not waiting for permission to participate.

They are already building.

The question is whether the rest of the economy is ready to:

  • Recognise their value
  • Support their growth
  • And invest in their potential

Because the next wave of innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth may very well come from the communities that have been underestimated for decades.
